On June 24, 2024, Northumberland County declared a Local Emergency and a Burn Ban effective at 5:00 p.m. until further notice, meaning open burning is prohibited

Does the Burn Ban include fireworks?

  • Independence Day holiday fireworks are not included in this ban, however those who celebrate with fireworks must do so in the following manner:
    • Have a fire extinguisher, water supply, hose or bucket of water nearby in case of a fire. All used fireworks should be placed in a bucket of water.
    • Do not ignite fireworks near dry vegetation or any combustible material.
    • Monitor the area for several hours after using fireworks. 
    • Fireworks may only be allowed by those who have an approved fireworks permit with the County of Northumberland and the State of Virginia unless such fireworks are included on the permissible fireworks list. Does the Burn Ban include grilling?

  • The Burn Ban does not include grilling (charcoal or gas).
  • Individuals grilling must monitor the grill at all times.
  • The grill must have a lid/cover.
  • Charcoal must be fully extinguished before dumping.
  • A water source must be close by.

If your fireworks are included on the 2024 Virginia Approved Permissible Fireworks List, only a county permit is required (see attached).

If your fireworks are NOT on the approved permissible fireworks list, you must obtain a state and a county permit. The State Permit can be found on the Virginia Department of Fire Programs website.

Completed county permits may be emailed to fireworks@co.northumberland.va.us or you may bring the permit to the Northumberland County Administrator's Office located at 72 Monument Pl., Heathsville, VA 22473 to receive approval of the permit.  The County will also request a copy of your state permit if applicable.
